Tennessee Girls Flag Football: Pearl-Kon, Hillsboro Video from MNPS title game

In her senior year, Diana Davis of Pearl-Kon knew that she wanted to go to college.
She did not know. Austin PE was his major choice. One of her other Pearl-Connar Girls, the football team partner, Madison Woodard, was in the same boat. She was considering Tennessi College of Applied Technology.
Then a unique opportunity arose. The two signed to play at the University of Camberland for flag football, which is an emerging Tssaa game. Both team partners Tatiana Groves and Cucumber Johnson planned to do the same in this spring.
Four years ago, it was nowhere near his radar.
Davis said, “I never thought I am signing a scholarship to play flag football.”
Woodard threw two touchdown passes and ran for two more, and Davis won a pass 26–18 over Hillsboro for the title of Metro Nashville Public Schools in McGavok in Pearl-Kon’s 26–18 win. This was the second consecutive title of Pearl-Kon.
Both schools advanced on 7-8 May in the first state invitation of TSSAA. Hosting a postson tournament is another step for the game, which can potentially receive TSSAA approval for the 2025–26 school year.
Woodard thought that flag football was a fun experience when MNP started offering the game three years ago. However, it had a limit, though. It was for fun.
“Now, it’s more serious,” he said. “I think it is motivating people to get more opportunities, because now you can go to college for it. Now it’s something you can work. Every year there is going to be more competition.”
Woodard and Davis received full recruitment experience from Cumberland County Athletic Director, Cumberland coach Steve Miller, who will lead the first team of the university in 2025-26. The women’s flag football began at NAA level in 2021, and although the national level official championship is not status, it cries a champion a champion in a champion.
What is the recruitment process in other sports. Davis and Woodard, who also play basketball, made official visits. Miller remained in close contact and even went to see him in Pearl-Conn Basketball Games.
Pearl-Kon has adopted flag football with open hands. Firebirds are 24–0 in the last two sessions and since 2023 all three district championships have reached the Games.
Pearl-Kon coach Kenneth Miller is equally acute on this edge as he is in decline as an assistant to the football team.
“I knew that the way I pushed the boys to try, I had to do the same for the girls,” he said. “This is probably just me. I am a coach in the same way. And I have found that they love hard love.”
