The LA28 schedule includes 50m backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly’s Olympic debut for both men and women and mixed 4×100 meter relay mixed on the track.
The additions are part of a broad push for modernizing the Olympics by the IOC and attracting new audiences. LA28 will have 22 more medal programs than Paris 2024, maintaining a total athlete quota of 10,500 in 31 games.

Sprint swimming events bring pure speed into the Olympic pool with 50m backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, offering fast running races that are already staples in the World Championships, but have never been painted on the Olympic stage. The new 4×100 meter mixed relay games of the track and field add to the growing lineup of mixed-lingal events, while artistic gymnastics will include male and female routine in their first mixed team competition-one incident.
Many of the new and returning events will appear in some major places of Los Angeles. Swimming will be held at the Sophie Stadium in English, where 38,000 seats will make it the largest swimming site in Olympic history. Gymnastics Los Angeles will be in the city of NBA’s Lams at Crypto.com Arina. Basketball will be played at La Clippers Intuit Dome, while the track and field will be in the historic Los Angeles Memorial Collizium.
Six new mixed events have been added, including golf, rowing (coastal beach sprint), table tennis and archery. Sport climbing will also contest its boulder and lead disciplin into separate medal programs and will already contest as a joint format.
LA Games have expressed priority in gender equality. For the first time in Olympic history, the number of women athlete quota spots (5,655) will cross the male quota spot (5,543). There will also be complete equality in all team games in sports Women’s football expands 16 teams – Four more than the men’s tournament – and the water polo added two female teams to match the men’s 12.

Boxing will also achieve full gender equality along the weight category of seventh women, which can equal the number of men and women divisions. In 3×3 basketball, the number of gender teams will be expanded from eight to 12.
IOC received proposals for 46 new programs out of 24 of the 31 international unions. The final program was shaped by the guidance of the principles prescribed in 2023, which emphasized global appeal, cost-evil, athlete focus and gender balance.
The LA28 will return or debut five sports – baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacros and squash – Los Angeles proposed by the organizing committee, which will contribute an additional 698 athlete quota locations.
While the game of 2028 will introduce more events than ever before, IOC says that every addition has been weighed for its impact on scheduling, logistics and overall athlete experience.
