May 27 (UPI) – Coco Goff overcame a prematch racket MissQ and overwhelmed his first -round enemy in 71 minutes, while Daniel Medvedev became the latest distressed victim on Tuesday at the 2025 French Open.
Goff opened his bag and saw that it did not include a racket, resulting in Australia’s number 91 Olivia to Gadeki in Paris. She went for lost time, converting 6 of 8 break point opportunities in 6–2, 6–2.
“I am blaming it on my coach, so it’s fine,” Goff said, when his on-court interview was asked about the racket guff.
In the WTA tour rankings, the number 2 player Gauf made a total of 15 winners and 22 unexpected errors, compared to 8 and 33 for their enemy.
“I think I could play as well as I could,” Gauf said. “It was really wind. … I knew it was not going to be a clear match of how much wind it was. It was hard to return and was trying to give time to the ball.
“But overall, I am really happy how I played and became happy through the next round.”
In the second round, Gauf will meet 172 Terreza Valentova of the Czech Republic. Valentova defeated France’s No. 119 Chlo Picket 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in their first round match.
The United States No. 3 Jessica Pegula and Russia’s No. 6 Mirra Andreva were among the other top women players to move forward in Rolland-Maros on Tuesday.
Germany’s No. 3 Alexander Zverev, Serbia’s No. 6 Novak Djokovic and Australia’s No. 9 Alex de Minaur were among the top men’s players to carry forward.
Zerev and Djokovic each swept the Americans. Zeverev defeated number 67 Learner TN 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. Djokovic bounced 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 to number 98 McKenzie McDonald.

Great Britain’s No. 81 Cameron Nori extended Russia’s No. 11 Daniel Medvedev for about four hours in the first round match. Nori converted 6 out of 12 break point opportunities in winning 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5.
“It was a crazy match,” Nori said. “He is very difficult to defeat. I think I deserve a diploma to defeat Medvedev. He has received me the last four or five times. It was an unrealist match.”
Bulgaria’s No. 17 Grigor Dimitrov also got out early through retirement due to injury during his opener against the United States No. 106 Ethan Quin. Dimitrov also retired from his last two Grand Slam shows – 2024 US Open and 2025 Australian Open.
Spain’s No. 2 Carlos Alkraj, Norway’s No.7 Casper Rood, Italy’s No. 8 Lorenzo Mussetti, Dammark’s No. 10 Holgar Run and Americans Tommy Tommy Paul (No. 12), Ben Shelton (No. 13) and Francis Tiang (No. 15) will be among the top men’s players on Wednesday in Rolland-Garros.
Belarus’s No. 1 Aryana Sabalenka, Italy’s No. 4 Jasmine Paolini, Poland’s No. 5 IGA Swiatech and China’s No. 7 Zheng Kinwen Paris will be among the top women players with second round matches on Wednesday.
